In 1990, the Dutch Type Library started supplying exclusive digital typefaces after years of preparation. The company was founded by Frank E. Blokland, and has since grown into the largest of its kind in The Netherlands. Attention is focused primarily on contemporary designs in the production of typefaces, but DTL also revives valuable historic types.
The Dutch Type Library feels bound to the rich typographic tradition of The Netherlands, and DTL’s collection can be compared with the very best that the famous type foundries have produced in the past.

As font production at DTL became more professional and complex, the need for exclusive specialist font production software grew. In the second half of the 1990s, Frank E. Blokland initiated the production of DTL FontMaster, a set of modules for the professional font production running under Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. The DTL FontMaster modules are programmed at the Hamburg, Germany, based company URW++ Design & Development GmbH. The latest (highly successful) addition to the FM suite is DTL OTMaster, a tool for editing and altering fonts with a snft file structure.
